Glee used to be my favourite TV show, there were a good couple of years where I knew everything about it, and then the writers kind of completely ruined it, and I rapidly lost interest and eventually stopped watching part way through the fourth season.
Yet somehow, when I learned that the same team behind Glee (RIB – Ryan Murphy, Ian Brennan and Brad Falchuk) were doing a new show, I was actually quite excited by it. Scream Queens focuses on a Sorority which considers itself to be a bit elite, fronted by Emma Roberts, who become embroiled in a murder investigation presided over by Jamie Lee Curtis.
They even managed to convince a few stars to put in appearances, including Ariana Grande and Nick Jonas.
In the UK we’re only on episode 2, although I think it’s been renewed for a second season, so we’re pretty far behind, as ever.
Honestly, when I first watched it, I got the distinct vibe from Jamie Lee Curtis’ headmistress character that she was the 2015 answer to Sue Sylvester. I’ve not yet shaken that feeling, but I’m hoping it goes because I do like Jamie Lee Curtis. I thought the first episode was a bit more over-the-top than I was expecting, but things either settled down a little for the second episode, or I got used to it very quickly. Either one is good, though.
I think this is the type of show that’s going to grow on you, which is a shame because I fell so completely in love with Glee so quickly. That said, episode 2 ended on a bit of a clever cliffhanger so I am looking forward to seeing where they go with it.
Overall if you’re thinking of starting watching this show, I think I’d say proceed with caution, maybe wait until you have a few more episodes to watch in a row as opposed to doing it on a weekly basis. I feel like it’s the kind of series you could just binge-watch on Netflix one rainy Sunday.
