Since I first posted my Oscar Nominations 2016 post, there have been a couple of different awards ceremonies and I’ve actually been to see three of the Best Picture nominations. As such I though I’d do a little roundup of the general consensus so far.
The Golden Globes actually took place on January 10th, but they’re widely regarded as a pretty good indicator of Academy wins. The only thing is they divide their categories into Drama, and Comedy/Musical. So Best Picture was both The Revenant and The Martian, Best Actor was both Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon, and best Actress was both Jennifer Lawrence and Brie Larson.

The SAG awards were on January 30th, and some places have actually drawn up science to show that Academy nominees very rarely win without having at least a SAG nomination. Because the SAGs are focused on the actors, instead of having a Best Picture category theirs is ‘Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture,’ the winner of which was Spotlight. Best Actor went to Leonardo DiCaprio, and Best Actress was Brie Larson.
I’ve now seen three out of the eight nominees (I’m doing pretty well!) and from what I’ve seen, I would have to give Best Picture to The Big Short. Shocking right? You thought I was going to say The Revenant. Don’t worry, I still think Leo deserves Best Actor, but The Big Short was a really special film, I was really impressed by how well done the film, about the financial crash of 2008, was. Spotlight was really impressive too but for some reason I can’t see the Academy giving it the coveted award.
Which Best Picture nominees have you seen, and which are you backing for the win?
